摘要
Surface roughness of biomaterials used in dentistry is one of the major determining factors for their success. A rough intra-oral surface will accumulate more plaque, leading to bacterial biofilm formation and poor periodontal health. Biofilm formation around dental implant surfaces may also lead to their inflammation and subsequent failure. The relationship is widely documented in the dental literature. Among various devices, confocal laser scanning microscopy (CLSM) is considered to be a valuable tool in dentistry research. Its applications include research on caries, response of hard and soft tissues to biomaterials (e.g., implants) and monitoring the effect of periodontal treatment regimens. The current review focuses on the studies involving the use of confocal microscopy to assess the surface roughness of dental materials particularly ceramics, the implant surface and bacterial accumulation leading to the formation of biofilm.
