The stepped controlled shunt reactor (SCSR) has been configured in the Xinjiang-Northwest 750 kV grid channel, which requires taking into account the coordination between SCSR and other traditional devices when performing automatic voltage control. As a solution under the new circumstances, a new method is put forward which not only makes full use of the AVC's fundamental optimization for reactive power and voltage, but also takes the safety requirement on the SCSR's reserved capacity into account by coordinating with other traditional reactive power compensation utilities, thus ensuring safe and economical grid operation. An actual system based on the method is studied and applied in the AVC control of 750 kV grid channel between Xinjiang and Northwest China, which has proven feasible and efficient. ©2015 Automation of Electric Power Systems Press
