Effect of microencapsulated ammonium polyphosphate on water resistance of water-based intumescent flame retardation coating

Microencapsulated ammonium polyphosphate(MCAPP) coated with a melamine-formaldehyde(MF) resin was prepared through in situ polymerization. The microencapsulation with MF resin leads to a reduction of the particles' water absorption. Ammonium polyphosphate(APP)-dipentaerythritol(DPE)-melamine(MEL) systems and MCAPP-DPE-MEL systems were chosen as intumescent flame retardants(IFR) to prepare water-based flame resistant coatings. The two comparative coatings were characterized by infrared spectroscopy(IR), thermogravimetry analysis(TGA), and so on. Results show that the latter has similar fire-retardation performances with the former but better water resistance than the former. Element analysis shows that the latter has a less loss of APP after water resistance test.
