Synthesis of ethyl tert-butyl ether with tert-butyl alcohol and ethanol on a H2SO4 activated bentonite

Bentonites have been treated by different concentrations H2SO4 solution, and x% H2SO4-BN (x=20, 25, 30, 35, 40) catalysts are obtained. XRD, BET, FT-IR, Py-IR and NH3-TPD are used to investigate the structure and properties of the bentonites, suggesting that the skeleton structure of the bentonites is not changed. Its surface area and pore volume are greatly improved in turn, and the week acid sites increase. Evaluation reaction of synthesis of ETBE from ethanol (EtOH) and tert-butyl alcohol (TBA) shows that 30% H2SO4-BN have the best catalytic activity, and the optimum experimental condition has been investigated.
