Genetic relationship and parental sources of major flue-cured tobacco cultivars in China were studied based on data of 36 major cultivars during 1986-2012. History of evolution, current status, accuracy of pedigree and disease resistance of quality traits were analyzed as well as breeding approaches and methods. Results revealed that the problems of major flue-cured tobacco cultivars in China were lack of genetic diversity and combination of quality traits and disease resistance. Suggestions were made on germplasm utilization in tobacco breeding were suggested.
