The Russian Defense Minister has presented detailed prospective defense spending plans for the year 2007. An estimated amount of $29.6 billion has been sanctioned for the expected defense spending plans that represent between 2.6 to 2.7 of the gross domestic product (GDP). The announcement was made after the Russian Defense Minister and the Deputy Prime Minister addressed the parliament revealing major plans to modernize the armed forces of the country. The announcements made include detailed acquisition and latest system purchase plans for the year 2006 for acquiring tanks, infantry fighting vehicles, and trucks, which are a key part of the modernization process. The statements are made against growing uneasiness within some sections of the government about the perceived weakness of the country in the international stage and the entry of NATO into Eastern Europe.
