The mechanical properties of viscoelastic damping materials have a direct impact on the damping effect of viscoelastic devices. Their mechanical behavior not only shows typical hyperelastic characteristics, but also indicates significant viscoelastic properties. In order to accurately describe the complex mechanical behavior of viscoelastic damping materials, inspired by the existing hyperelastic mechanical model, the multinomial viscosity equation was constructed to reflect the strain-rate effect of the materials. Subsequently, the corresponding viscoelastic strain energy function was established by introducing the hydrodynamic reinforcement theory to consider the influence of fillers. The constitutive model of viscoelastic damping materials considering the strain-rate effect was addressed through theoretical derivation. Furthermore, a series of performance experiments were carried out to investigate the stress-strain relationship of viscoelastic damping materials under different loading strain rates. The test results were used to verify the accuracy and applicability of the proposed model. The results show that the strain rate has a significant effect on the mechanical properties of viscoelastic damping materials. The prediction robustness of the proposed model has been greatly improved by considering the strain-rate effect and the filler-reinforcement effect. The proposed model can accurately predict the stress-strain behavior of viscoelastic damping materials under different strain rates in a wide range (0-300%) of strain with a good prediction accuracy. © 2022, Editorial Office of Journal of Building Structures.
