Technological development is leading to the emergence of new decentralized applications, such as decentralized production systems. Production systems require efficient production control for goal-oriented and resource-saving order processing. The environment in which the production control is implemented contributes significantly to its task fulfilment. This paper examines and analyses centralized and decentralized databases as well as edge and cloud computing as environments for production control. It additionally examines the potential of blockchain technology to solve the various problems of the presented production control environment. © 2024 Walter de Gruyter GmbH.
