Optimization design of coil springs based on orthogonal experiments

To improve the elastic resilience of coil springs, the finite element model of the coil spring was established by using Ansys Workbench, and the reliability of the numerical simulation was verified by comparing with the test results, using elastic energy and maximum equivalent stress as evaluation indexes and the influence of the sheet width, sheet thickness, cross-section diameter, number of coils, and central diameter on the elastic resilience was investigated. The sensitivity of the structural parameters to the elastic energy and peak equivalent stress of the coil spring was analyzed by orthogonal experiments, and in addition, based on the two objectives of the maximum elastic energy and the minimum equivalent stress, the structural parameters of the coil spring were optimized. The results show that the elastic energy of the coil spring increases with the increase of sheet width, sheet thickness, cross-section diameter and the number of coils. The peak equivalent stress increases with the increase of sheet width and central diameter, and decreases with the increase of cross-section diameter and the number of coils. The thickness of the sheet has the greatest influence on the elastic energy, the number of coils has the greatest influence on the peak equivalent stress, and the central diameter has the least influence on both the elastic energy and the peak equivalent stress. The optimized coil spring increases the elastic energy by 190.14%, while the peak equivalent stress decreases by 2.26%. © 2024 Central South University of Technology. All rights reserved.
