摘要
The power consumption in optical network is an important factor, and it should be minimum to operate system efficiently. Flexible bandwidth allotment and efficient utilization of fiber spectrum also increase the power requirement in elastic optical networks (EONs). EONs are used to transmit expensive quantity of traffic data, and additional power resources are needed for handling link failure situation to save the data. Another reason to increase power is the use of ring structure which provides high reliability and fast response. Hence, it is essential that optical network should be power efficient. When failure occurs in single link in EONs, shortest path routing (SPR) is preferred to get high resource efficiency. Power conscious routing (PCR) can play an important role in EONs to fulfill the requirement of power efficient network. In this paper, PCR is applied in EONs and design an integer linear programming model which will show the minimum consumption of power. The basic concept to reduce the power consumption during the operation of routing and protection is to set down maximum number of idle network resources in sleep mode or off mode. It is clear from the numerical results that the ring protection with PCR may be preferred over the SPR in low traffic because it requires less power. It is also observed that the requirement of the power will be saturated when traffic increases. © The Institution of Engineers (India) 2024.
