摘要
Automation of manual activities in manufacturing can enable personnel to operate multiple machines. This enables companies to maintain production capacities despite increasing staff shortages. However, certain activities on the machines (e.g. eliminating errors) are highly stochastic, meaning that the effects of increased machine operation through automation on production output cannot be easily estimated. Based on a case study in industrial manufacturing, this article illustrates the production process using a digital twin. The article shows the necessity of the digital twin and derives general recommendations for action. © 2024 Walter de Gruyter GmbH, Berlin/Boston, Germany.
