Rare earth extraction and separation is the most important step to realize the efficient utilization of rare earth resources. Therefore, the characteristics of the extraction separation technology and the performance of the extractant are the keys to determine the separation capacity and separation efficiency in the extraction process. This paper briefly summarizes the development of rare earth extraction and separation technology in recent years and the research progress of extractants. Combined with the research on the structure-activity relationship of rare earth extractants, the research direction of new rare earth extractants is prospected. © 2022, Editorial Office of Journal of the Chinese Society of Rare Earths.
