Weyerhaeuser Co., Georgia-Pacific Corp., and Mead Corp., three of the largest US producers of pulp, paper and wood products, reported profits that were better than Wall Street expectations. Weyerhaeuser's wood pulp, paper and packaging businesses posted operating earnings of $252 million in the year 2000 compared to $105 million in the year 1999. Mead corp increased sales from acquisitions in the office products segment and higher prices for coated paper as compared to 1999. Meanwhile, Georgia-Pacific's net income fell to $130 million.
