Review on Silane Impregnation of Concrete Surface and Its Long-Term Hydrophobic Performance

The water absorption, ageing mechanisms and laboratory characterization, long-term practice, technical requirements from standards and service life design and prediction with respect to the effect of hydrophobic treatment of concrete surface by silane were reviewed. Silane, e.g., triethoxyisobutylsilane and triethoxyisooctylsilane, can restrict the liquid-based transport across the concrete surface, which is sensitive to water pressure, and the efficiency on the concrete at a low pH value is not yet clarified. The ageing of silane impregnation can be induced by external photo-oxidation and internal alkaline environment of concrete. The characterization techniques available in laboratory include Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and pyrolysis gas chromatograpy-mass spectrometry(PGC-MS), but the quantitative results are still lack. The silane impregnation is widely used in practice, and the relevant technical standards are available, but tools for service life design and prediction are still needed. © 2019, Editorial Department of Journal of the Chinese Ceramic Society.
