A direct injection turbocharged diesel engine, fueled with four diesel fuels with different sulfur content is tested to study the effects of sulfur content in the fuel on the emission characteristics of diesel engine. Results show that with the reduction of sulfur content in the fuel, HC, CO and smoke emissions markedly decrease in that order; NOx emission also reduces with the decrease in sulfur content, but having only minor changes; while SO2 emission obviously rises with the increase in engine load and apparently decreases with the drop in sulfur content, showing high correlation between sulfur content and SO2 emission.
