Over the years, the drilling industry has been looking at alternative ways to improve toughness without sacrificing wear resistance or any other critical properties. This paper discusses conventional technology as well as some of the newer alternatives, including coarse-grain carbides, double-cemented carbides, and diamond-enhanced inserts.
