Synthesis and thermal stability and salt resistance properties of fatty alcohol polyoxyethylene ether(5) sulfonate

Fatty alcohol polyoxyethylene ether (5) (AEO-5) reacted with metallic sodium to form sodium polyehoxylated coconut fatty alcoholate, and the latter further reacted with sodium 2-chloroethanesulfonate monohydrate to form the product fatty alcohol polyoxyethylene ether sulfonate (AESO), which then was characterized by FT-IR. The influences of the reaction temperature, reaction time, molar ratio of sodium 2-chloroethanesulfonate monohydrate to sodium polyehoxylated coconut fatty alcoholate on the yield of AESO were mainly discussed. The thermal stability, salt resistance and surface properties of AESO were examined. As a result, the optimal conditions of AESO synthesis were obtained, which were reaction temperature of 64°C, reaction time of 5 h, molar ratio of sodium 2-chloroethanesulfonate monohydrate to sodium polyehoxylated coconut fatty alcoholate of 1.2. Under the optimal conditions, the AESO yield could reach its highest value. The surface properties and thermal stability and salt resistance of AESO were much better than that of AES. AESO could be used in enhanced oil recovery with high temperature and high salinity.
