A mixture of microcrystalline cellulose and chitosan in 70% aqueous solution of zinc chloride was prepared and cellulose/chitosan (MCC/CS) composite films were fabricated using the solution casting method. And then tetracycline hydrochloride (TCH) was loaded into MCC/CS composite films. The composite films were characterized and the successful loadings of TCH in the composite films were confirmed by Fourier transform infrared spectrometer (FTIR), scanning electron microscope (SEM) and thermal gravimetric (TG) analysis. The release behavior and antibacterial performance were evaluated as well. The results showed that MCC/CS films loaded with TCH exhibited controlled TCH release performance and good antimicrobial property. The as-prepared composite films may have potentials in biomedical materials. © 2018 American Scientific Publishers
