Within a current research project, the Werkzeugmaschinenlabor at the RWTH Aachen is testing the implementation of a cost-efficient numerical control with minimised functional range that is primarily targeted at large-scale production. For this purpose a modular reference architecture has been developed which allows a custom-tailored reduction of the control's functionality without implying unwanted constraints for the production process. Two different control prototypes helped to evaluate the technological an economical benefits of the overall concept as well as to validate the reference architecture itself.
