The mixture formation in direct injection diesel engines is one of the keys to fulfilling future exhaust emissions criteria. In order to understand the potentials of mixture formation, a fuel injector for research based on a common rail diesel injection system has been developed. The piezo-electric injector with direct needle control is capable of realizing injection rates currently being discussed, for example multiple injection or a so called boot-shaped main injection.
