The chemical behaviour of free and ionized ammonia in water is outlined and the use of online ammonia analyzers in the monitoring and control of water and wastewater treatment processes are discussed. These analyzers are used to optimize activated sludge and biological nutrient removal processes, to monitor nitrification to meet ammonia discharge limits in advanced wastewater treatment plants, and to monitor chloramination in drinking water treatment processes. The three major types of online ammonia analyzer technologies are described-colorimetric, ion-selective electrodes (ISE), and ultraviolet absorbance or multiple wavelength UV absorbance spectrophotometers. Electronics, process interference, sample conditioning systems, analyser selection and testing are also considered.
