Worldwide next-generation Internet initiatives are creating very-high speed networks to develop leading applications. These networks need more bandwidth for broadband networked applications and optical networking technologies are being more attractive in addition to high-speed packet forwarding and quality of service (QoS) technologies. This paper surveys high-speed networking technologies deployed in the next-generation Internet projects such as the Interne2 and CANARIE and international internetworking projects. The current status regarding QoS control technologies and optical peering technologies are also described.
