Ni-Al intermetallic compound coatings were prepared by laser cladding and reaction synthesis with mixed-powders of nickel-coated aluminum, Ni-based alloy and Al. The results show that the two-phase coatings consist mainly of NiAl and Ni3Al, with the dendritic NiAl phase surrounded continuously by Ni3Al, and some other Ni3Al precipitation from the NiAl phase in fine irregular angular-shape. Compared with directly cladding nickel-coated aluminum powder, adding nickel-based alloy and aluminum powders to the nickel-coated aluminum not only reduces the cladding power from 2.4 kW to 2.1 kW, but also improves the coatings quality and reduces the molten iron from substrate into the coatings. The hardness values of the coatings are up from 410-440 HV to 490-540 HV. ©, 2014, Editorial Office of Transactions of Materials and Heat Treatment. All right reserved.
