Fare collection technology in the public transport system in London is expected to improve with the introduction of smart cards in London Underground and London Buses scheduled for August 2002. More information can be stored using smart cards due to higher processing and storage capacity compared to magnetic tickets. The smart card system is scalable and can be integrated with other applications.
