3D reconstruction based on tomographic images is an important research subject in medical visualization. Aiming at achieving the high-accuracy reconstruction of skull from computed tomography images, a new surface reconstruction algorithm based on medical tomographic images is proposed. First of all, the united algorithm of the improved GVF-Snake model with optimized force field and ray method is used to extract the outermost contours from skull's tomographic images. Then, the skull surface model is reconstructed by contour connection according to the improved shortest diagonal algorithm with judgment function of contour fracture. The experimental results show that the algorithm improves the accuracy of surface reconstruction of skull. © 2013 Binary Information Press.
