Stability of a rub-impact rotor system

Vibration characteristics of a rub-impact rotor system supported on oil film bearings were investigated. By assuming that the oil film forces were from the short bearing approximation, elastic impact and the Coulomb type of frictional relationship, a nonlinear mathematical model was presented with piecewise linear stiffness and nonlinear oil film forces. The shooting method was used to obtain the periodic solutions for the system. The stability of the solutions was analyzed using the Floquet theory; The period-doubling bifurcation and the Hopf bifurcation were found. The results provide further understanding of the rub-impact fault and enable early prediction of this fault in rotating machinery.
