Mead expects to remove 70,000 tons of coated paper production in the fourth quarter of year 2001. Its coated sales volumes were up 2% from the second quarter of 2001 but again fell down by 2% than the previous year. Mead will take some downtime to bring its inventories down to meet its demand. For coated freesheet, unfavourable economic conditions and foreign imports did have a negative effect on both price and product mix. International Paper (IP) lowered its coated inventories by 25,000 tons from mid-year. The workers at the Glens Falls, N.Y., paper mill are on strike due to some company policies. The company is trying to solve the problem in association with the unions and some third party mediation.
