Canada's National Shipbuilding Procurement Strategy (NSPS) has led to a boom in the Canadian shipbuilding industry that has not been seen since the Second World War. In response to the NSPS and Canada's need for advanced training opportunities, UBC has introduced a new master of engineering in naval architecture and marine engineering (NAME) program, which will graduate its first cohort of 14 students in November 2014. The 12-month program is the result of extensive collaboration with many of the leaders of BC's shipbuilding sector, including representatives from Seaspan Marine, Vard Marine. Students who complete the program's nine unique courses and internship will have the ability to perform a preliminary design of a ship or other marine vessel. The new graduate program synthesizes theory and practice through a project-based learning experience.
