The STLE Annual Meeting Keynote Session in Houston on May 20 2002 focused on space travel and equipment reliability. Presentations made during the session related to the modelling of atomic-scale phenomena governing the tribology of hydrocarbon-containing contact systems, developments in sensing technology, the role of tribology mechanisms in the reliability and life of the Space Shuttle Main Engine turbopumps, and the personnel experiences of an astronaut.
