In operation since June 2002 the new coke battery at the Lucchini Piombino works, Italy, is an example of advanced coke oven technology. The plant has been performing successfully in respect of both environmental and production parameters, the reasons for this being the right choice of technology and professionalism of the project management. On the technology side, the main criteria were to achieve a safe and reliable design and to extensively utilize advanced engineering tools. On the project management side, close control of each execution phase and the involvement of a highly motivated professional team were keys to the success. The modern and highly efficient battery was completed on a turn-key basis in 24 months.
