With the demand of structural lightweight, metal-polymer and metal-composite thin-walled structures have been widely used in many fields such as transportation, aerospace and so on. Clinching has the advantages of high efficiency, energy saving, environmental friendliness and low cost, which provides a solution for the joining of dissimilar materials. Due to the poor ductility of polymer and its composite, to reduce the forming damage of joints, improve the joining efficiency and the mechanical properties of joints, some improved joining technologies have been proposed. In order to promote the engineering application of clinching, the clinching technologies of metal polymer and its composite thin-walled structures are reviewed, the applicability of each joining technology, forming process method, influencing factors of forming quality and mechanical properties of joints are discussed. Finally, aiming at the problems to be solved in the design of joining process, the research direction of clinching is prospected. © 2023 Cailiao Daobaoshe/ Materials Review. All rights reserved.
