Various ionic liquids (ILs) have been used as catalysts and solvents for the Knoevenagel condensation to afford substituted olefins. All Knoevenagel reactions performed effectively in ILs without any other catalyst. High yield of products were obtained with the use of 1-butyl-3-methylimidazonium trifluoroacetate [BMIM]+ [CF3COO]- and 1-butyl-3-methylimidazonium acetate [BMIM]+ [CH3COO]- This method is simple and straight. These ionic liquids can be recycled and reused easily.
