Countries in Asia and Europe have embarked on major infrastructure projects to upgrade existing rail systems to High-Speed Rail (HSR) and to develop new HSR systems. In the USA, progress has been more halting, with significant political and economic barriers to the growth of HSR. This paper examines the advantages and disadvantages of HSR, the experience of other countries and the barriers to the growth of HSR in the USA. By studying the effects of HSR in other countries, recommendations for the future of high-speed rail in the USA can be more realistically evaluated. Copyright © 2013 Inderscience Enterprises Ltd.
