This article addresses the fundamentals of proper centrifugal pump operation and commons areas of improper operation. The most frequent causes of centrifugal pump failure which are also associated with operation are summarised and discussed. These are: Insufficient suction pressure to avoid cavitation, excessively high flow rate for the net positive suction head (NPSH) available, prolonged operation at lower than acceptable flow rates, operation at zero or near zero flow rate, improper operation of pumps in parallel, failure to maintain adequate lubrication of bearings, and failure to maintain satisfactory flushing to mechanical seals.
