The development of a smart city requires the on-going and collective efforts of public authorities, companies and citizens. A smart city is not just one with many sensors, but one that employs technology for a purpose. This should have three main characteristics: firstly, contain an administrative team that heads innovation; secondly, that there be consensus, a partnership agreement between the public and private sectors that incorporates local and global solutions without exclusion; and thirdly, that the city's inhabitants show enthusiasm and support for the project. Telefonica is currently working with thirty or so different applications, including traffic management, Smart Parking and environmental and agricultural monitoring.
