Power amplifiers (PAs) will receive significant attention in the 5G era because of increasing wireless communication requirements. The development trends of PAs with broader bandwidth, higher efficiency, and higher power using conventional concepts are no longer the primary focus of PA technologies for 5G applications. The PA is not a stand-alone device but rather a closely related part of the wireless communication system (WCS). Here, we analyze PA design technology over the last few decades and look at possible future requirements for 5G applications, the characteristics of these PAs for 5G applications, and possible future applications of 5G PA technologies. © 2019 IEEE.
