Scaling of plane-wave Born cross sections for electron-impact excitation of neutral atoms

Two simple scaling methods for first-order, plane-wave Born cross sections for electron-impact excitations of neutral atoms are presented. Both methods are applicable to integrated cross sections for electric dipole-allowed transitions. With both methods, excitation cross sections can be reliably calculated to ±20% or better at the cross-section peak.
