Roe scheme was proved to have too large numerical dissipation for large eddy simulation (LES). In this research the dissipation term of Roe scheme is subdivided into five parts, and then the dissipation characteristic of each part is studied. Through the LES of homogeneous decaying turbulence, the main sources of numerical dissipation of Roe scheme are due to the basic upwind dissipation term and velocity-difference-driven modification term of the interface pressure, and the dissipation value of each term is larger than the actual required value. Multiplying the coefficient of the basic upwind dissipation term by 0.5, however, the dissipation characteristic is close to ideal. It means that the subgrid turbulence dissipation can be replaced by the numerical dissipation. This research is useful to improve Roe scheme for LES. © 2015, Science Press. All right reserved.
