With the access and application of distributed energy, microgrid and advanced measurement infrastructure in smart distribution network, the volume of information in a smart distribution network will be much greater than current distribution networks. In order to ensure the reliability and economy of the information network, optimal planning is needed. An optimization model is given for the survivability of the smart information network by using the N-1 criterion. A heuristic algorithm is proposed to solve the model successfully. Finally, the heuristic algorithm is compared with the 1+1 protection optimal model in an example of distribution information network planning for a county, the results showing that the heuristic algorithm can satisfy the survivability constraints of network planning. © 2014 State Grid Electric Power Research Institute Press
