As a crucial component of a dye-sensitized solar cell (DSSC), the counter electrode (CE) plays an important role in the performance and cost of DSSC. Various materials, such as conducting polymer, inorganic compounds and carbon materials, are used as the catalyst of CE, but the catalytic activity of these materials mentioned above are usually lower in comparison with Pt. The progress of Pt CE in recent years are summarized, and the prospects and challenges of Pt CE for their applications are presented. At the same time, the operation principle of DSSC and the function of CE are introduced briefly. © 2016, Materials Review Magazine. All right reserved.
