Study on fractal dimension of runoff sequence based on successive wavelet transform

Based on the statistical self-similarity of hydrology time series, a new approach for estimating the fractal dimension by using successive wavelet transform coefficients is proposed. The basic calculation steps are given. The fractal dimensions of the annual runoff series at some main stations in the Yellow River are obtained by using the proposed approach. In contrast to the Rescaled Range Analysis, the fractal dimension of wavelet method is robust. The results of case studies show that the wavelet method is feasible.
