The Aerosol Vaporization Spectrometer (AVS) can measure the mass of absorbing material on single particles over a size range from 0.05 to 10 μm and differentiate soot from other types of absorbing materials like metals and dust. The measurement method is based on the principle that light absorbing particles will increase in temperature when illuminated with a high intensity light source. AVS can differentiate different types of absorbing particles. This technique has now been modified and reconfigured to make groundbased or airborne measurements.
