The Red Lake gold mine and mill in Balmertown (Ontario) started operation in 1948, but closed in 1996 by a strike. During the ensuing four-year shutdown, a major exploration program resulted in the delineation of the High Grade Zone (HGZ). Based on a feasibility study conducted in 1998, a two-phase project was initiated to further develop the mine.
