Connection of internal computer networks to the Internet and other outside networks gives hackers access to important data components. Firewalls protect data against intrusion and fraud. Statistical data are presented to forecast a steady growth of the European firewall market from 2000 through 2005. Both software firewalls and firewall appliances (hardware) are covered. Special attention is given to the new technology of virtual private networks. Value added resellers and internet service providers are mentioned as primary distribution channels for firewall products. The role of data firewalling in the printing industry is emphasized.
