The S-band amplification technique, which is the next frontier for optical amplification, is discussed. Semiconductor optical amplifiers can be used for the S-band; however their application in wavelength-division multiplexed systems has been constraint by high-crosstalk between optical channels. Various issues are to be resolved before S-band amplifiers are ready for use, such as will it be cost-effective and the effective gain equalization over wide bands.
