Land use and land cover change is an important component in understanding the interactions of the human activities with the environment. The study area, Havelock Island of Andaman & Nicobar shows tremendous changes Land use land cover over the past one decade due to tourism and urbanization. The settlement with vegetation, degraded mangrove has increased for about 773 ha. and 13 ha. respectively. Mangroves, coral reef, sandy beach, reserve forest were decreased for about 72 ha., 6 ha., 8 ha. and 651 ha. respectively. The results indicated that there has been a notable and uneven urban growth and a tremendous loss in natural resource as well as man made resource like reserve forest, coral reef, sandy beaches, vegetation with settlement, mangroves etc; between 1993 and 2003. The study demonstrates that the remote sensing and GIS is an effective approach for analyzing the direction, rate, and spatial pattern of land use land cover change in Havelock Island. © 2013 CAFET-INNOVA TECHNICAL SOCIETY.
