New saccharide-derived monomers and their use in water-treatment polymers

摘要
Carbohydrates ranging from monosaccharides to large oligosaccharides were functionalized with a single polymerizable a-methyl styryl group using reductive animation as the key synthetic step. These new monomers were then copolymerized with acrylic acid to give water treatment polymers with pendent saccharide functionality. The thus modified water treatment polymers could be detected down to 1 part per million using a classical quantitative analytical test for saccharides.
