In this paper, the concept of nanostructure devices based on electron waveguides is reviewed, with emphasis on the analysis of coupled electron waveguides in III-V compound semiconductor. The fundamental properties of electron waveguides, their modal characteristics and the basic techniques for fabrication of devices based on electron waveguides are elaborated. Applications of quantum interference devices, which utilize the interference and diffraction phenomenon in electron waves, such as electron waveguide switch, electron waveguide filter and electron wave diffraction grating are briefly described.
