Various innovative techniques and economic beneficial strategies have enabled UK to become a center of excellence in automotive engine manufacture. The figures are cited in a report into the state of the UK engine industry published in the month of June 2005 by the DTI and the representative body for the UK's car makes and sellers the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT). UK engine production exhibits all the signs of steady growth with 2004's total up by 29 per cent. Total exports of engines from the UK for the year 2004 were worth nearly £800m. There has been specific government support for automotive R&D.
