The main features of Direct conversion receiver (DCR) for radio communication systems, is discussed. DCR has changed the receiver design in mobile handsets by supporting reduced component count, smaller physical dimensions, and lower production cost. The super-heterodyne receiver has been used in the designing of the wireless handset due to its superior performance resulting from the utilization of highly linear off-chip filters, but it is not suitable for monolithic integration due to utilization of several off-chip filters that make the receiver expensive and complex for multimode designs. The DCR supports multimode operation while eliminating the need for multiple off-chip filters.
